But do we really need to wash our hair this often, or at all?
Sometimes hair care can become a boring task and can end up costing an arm and a leg!
Throughout history, think back to pre-historic times. Would humans have worried about washing their hair?
Most likely not, so why do we see it as being so important now?
We’re going to take a look at what would happen if we ditched the shampoo for a while.
Where did shampoo come from?
Shampoo or various forms of hair cleaning products have been used since the 1800s, and at that time, you were recommended to wash your hair once a month.
In 1927 German inventor Hans Schwarzkopf created the world’s first-ever liquid soap.
Then in the 1930s, a company based in Ohio called Procter & Gamble launched the first synthetic shampoo.
Since then, the market for shampoo has only continued to grow.
By the 1970s, many ad campaigns were created to encourage people to wash their hair once a day, and since then, it has become the norm.
Is shampoo bad for your hair?
You may think that using shampoo is great for your hair because it makes it clean, but in fact, it can be quite damaging.
There is an underground movement in support of this, and their theory is called the “No Poo” method.
The theory of the no-poo method is that our hair contains natural oils, and using shampoos with harsh chemicals inside can strip away these natural oils.
This leaves your hair in a bad condition and creates a dependency on the use of shampoo to treat your hair.
By not using shampoo, you are saving your hair from this man-made disaster and will have healthier hair.
It can be difficult to just cut out the shampoo, so alternatives are sometimes used; things like apple cider vinegar, baking soda, or just water can be used as a gentle cleanser for your hair.
Why does breaking the cycle lead to healthier hair?
The key to having fresh-looking hair and not washing it is simple, but it is a long process. You simply stop washing it and break the routine!
On our scalp, we have sebaceous oil glands that naturally produce and release oil when the hair is starting to get dry.
Every time we wash our hair, it dries it out, and although you can use hair conditioner to smoothen hair, the gland will still produce oil.
If you wash your hair every day, then the glands will be overproducing to compensate for the dry hair, and in turn, this will lead to greasy-looking roots.
This can lead to overwashing hair and can result in your wanting to wash it again, and hence you become stuck in a vicious cycle.
Depending on the hair type, products used previously, and how often you used to shampoo, it can take around 2-6 weeks for the glands to return to a normal healthy routine of producing oil.
So during this time, your hair might not look great and might feel greasy because of the excess oil, but it is on its way to recovery.
There are many tips and tricks for making the transition easier, like brushing your hair more regularly to distribute the oil through the hair.
Sometimes the best approach is to cut down the number of times you wash your hair per week and gradually make it less and less.
Benefits of NOT washing your hair with chemicals.
By choosing to use alternative natural products or even just using water, you are already benefiting.
Not just for the health of your hair but for your lifestyle.
Shampoos and some hair products can contain highly toxic chemicals. Whilst it’s questionably okay to use on our hair and skin, once it gets washed down the drain, it can be really damaging to the environment if it is not filtered out properly.
The chemicals used can be harmful to wildlife and waterways.
These products can also end up costing quite a lot each month or whenever you need to restock.
There are products in your home that double up as a great hair cleanser.
As mentioned before, kitchen items like vinegar and baking soda can be used to clean your hair, which will save you money over time.
There are also a variety of essential oil-based products or even recipes to make your own cleansing mixtures that will leave your hair smelling and feeling wonderful.
This means you can cut down on your waste too.
By using water or chemical-free products or not washing it at all, you will allow your hair to restore its natural oils and return to a healthier state.
Plus it means you will have more free time!
Are there any benefits of using shampoo?
There can be benefits to washing hair with shampoos, even synthetic ones that contain chemicals.
By shampooing, you are removing dirt and dust from your hair which will, in turn, help reduce odors.
If you buy perfumed soaps or shampoos, this will leave your hair smelling fresh and fruity, which will also help with this.
If having greasy hair gets you down, then shampooing is a quick fix to give you a little confidence boost for that special date or girls’ night out.
A common misunderstanding is that head lice prefer dirty hair.
This is, however, a myth as they don’t care about hair cleanliness; they are after any hair so they can feed on blood.
Washing your hair repeatedly will also not get rid of them as they can withstand being submerged in water for hours on end!
After looking into the research carried out by both medical and health professionals to enthusiasts in the hair and beauty industry, hair care really is a personal choice.
In most cases, there are few medical reasons as to why you should wash your hair or use certain shampoos.
So unless you have a pre-existing medical condition that may be affected by this, why not give it a try and see how long you can go without shampooing?

Speaking personally, I find a once a week wash is fine!

As a teen, I started getting acne, and my dermatologist told me not to scrub my scalp because it stimulated the oil glands, thus creating acne around my hairline. It worked. I don't color or perm my hair but not washing it might be pushing it. Interesting though and it does make sense.
So used to shampooing my hair I don't think I can stop. -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
Very interesting. I don't know if I could go without shampoo. I agree, once a week is good.
I have to wash my hair daily. I can't stand when it's dirty. But then my hair is really short and so it isn't a big deal to wash it.
Muy interesante. Te mando un beso.
Dear Jan, you provide so much helpful information and food for thought on many things associated with our health. I truly appreciate 🙏 ❤️ all your posts.
Thank you so much.
I try to go once a week in winter and twice a week in summer. Hair spray build up is my major issue.
I've been using shampoo since I was born. I have wondered if it dries out my hair. I wash it to style it. I'll give it a try just using water since my hair is already very dry.
I've been wondering about shampoos lately - how healthy they are and if some are better than others.
Any advice about a good deodorant without aluminum?
What an interesting article!! When I was young I washed my hair every day in the shower. Now, as a senior, I wash my hair once a week. I find that works fine for my hair. Thanks for sharing all the info.
Useful information.
I believe in washing hair at least twice a week (my opinion)...
You've got me thinking...
Great post, Jan! Interesting to learn that it can take around one month for the glands to return to normal health level. I always use natural products, which are just a bit expensive, but I use them once a week.
Thank you for sharing.
While reducing harsh shampoo use can help preserve natural scalp oils and lower costs, a balanced routine tailored to hair type and hygiene needs is probably the most practical approach
I have never found a shampoo or conditioner that really suits my hair. The one that came closest and which I bought repeatedly was by Ojon, which is no longer available. My routine for washing has varied greatly over the years from daily when very short to weekly when very long, and also depending on pollution levels and atmospheric conditions too! These days, medication means my hair is no longer my crowning glory and I have never had such an itchy, dry scalp or hair so thin and brittle. For several years when I worked on the beach I didn't wash my hair all summer long! Just a daily rinse with clean water to remove salt. My hair was incredible at the end of the season!
That's a good article on washing or not washing ones hair, Jan. I have long hair and I wash it once a week, use Rosemary oil on the ends as the scalp goes greasy towards the 6th day. Take care.
I wash my hair every other day, mainly because it feels ready for a wash then, probably due to the facts you state, my hair is just used to this routine.
I have read of people not washing their hair for a year or more, claiming that it is self-cleaning. I really don't fancy that!
This is an interesting post about washing hair. I can wash my hair once a week, only more often if I'm going to the doctor, for example, but otherwise it's enough for me.
I used to wash my hair almost every day; it always felt like it had to be clean to look clean.
Hugs Elke
...I don't have much to wash!
I used Wash-and-Go. I washed and it all went. Must have been the shampoo. Should have used real poo.
God bless.
My hair is pretty dry so I wash it about once a week. It works for me and glad to see others are similar.
Interesting how a chemical company helped us wash our hair more frequently... Of course, with so little hair, I'm more concerned about washing my beard!
Interesting information.
I usually wash my hair once a week and use "chemical free" shampoos. I remember when I was young meeting an older woman in my grandmother's village that hadn't washed her long hair in over 10 years, and it looked thick and strong, she would just brush and braid it. Have a good weekend Jan.
I think we are all so used to using Shampoo! Good read :-D
Interesting post and info on Hari washing. I get upset to see my hair lose during a wash. Take care, have a great day!
I fully agree with this and I wish I can find appropriate alternatives around dear Jan 👍
Blessings ♥️🙏
This is interesting because just this morning as I was showering and washing my hair, I was thinking about this very topic. Six or seven years ago I tried using the apple cider vinegar and stayed with it for several weeks but didn't care for the end result. I know a lady who makes all of her own personal care items using essential oils. I think I will check with her and see if she has one for shampoo as well. If it works, then I will definitely use it because hair care products can cost a small fortune. Thanks, Jan, for helping me think this through.
Boa noite Jan.
I went poo free for the last 10-11 years. Seemed like the ends got increasingly brittle and my (long) hair stopped growing so now I’m trying shampoo and conditioner again. 😫

Good evening Jan. This article is very interesting. I mostly use soap to wash my hair. It's been years since I've used shampoo. Thank you for the article, which is full of explanations. Big hug from your friend in Brazil. Have a great Thursday night.

Hello and thank you for your comment.
With regard to deodorant without aluminum, my suggestion would be that in your computer search engine type:-
Best Deodorants Without Aluminum in America, and I believe it should link you to appropriate sites where you can find this information.
Similarly we have those sites in the UK too ...
I do hope you find a product that is suitable for you.
All the best Jan
I wash my hair every other day.
So very interesting. I wash my hair 3 times a week. I might start with once a week a first to see how that goes! :)
Living in a hot country and wearing a hat when out in the sun means my scalp gets sweaty and my naturally very dry hair really stinks by the end of a week so a weekly shampoo is necessary, but I dilute the shampoo and conditioner (so it lasts longer) and finish the washing process with a cold rinse of water and cider vinegar.
